Take a good look at your nails.  How do they look?  Do they look yellow to you?  Most experts agree taking your nail polish off once in a while is a good idea.  This makes sure your nails look healthy and there’s nothing odd going on.  No polish let’s them breathe, so to speak.  If you notice your polish-free nails are yellow, it’s important to address that issue.  Luckily, it’s an issue fix.

Most often nails turn yellow because of  being stained by the colored nail polishes.  To avoid staining,  apply a clear base coat to protect your nails before you layer a bright color on top. A second cause of yellow nails may be the nail polish remover you use. If you use an acetone nail polish remover,  it may cause a yellow tint to your nails.  Try a non-acetone nail polish remover when taking off your color. A final culprit to consider is a fungal infection. Fungal infections cause other issues such as flaking, an unpleasant odor, and peeling.  If you think you have a fungal nail infection, over the counter medicine may do the trick. Be sure to see your doctor if you do not see improvement with home remedies.

So how can you whiten your nails? Thankfully, it’s a fairly easy process. You don’t have to live with yellow nails.  Once you rule out any other cause such as infection, smoking, or genetics, there are plenty of home remedies to help you return your nails to their natural state.   Here are some of my favorites:

Hydrogen Peroxide:  Mix together one part hydrogen peroxide to three parts water in a small bowl. Soak your nails for ten to fifteen minutes. Rinse well.  Afterwards, apply a moisturizer to your hands and nails before patting dry with a soft towel. Hydrogen Peroxide can dry out your skin and nails.

Denture tablets:  I promise I’m not making this one up!  While denture tablets are made to whiten dentures, you can also use these to whiten your finger nails.  Follow the directions on the package and soak your nails in the solution. Dry your hands and nails on a soft towel.

Whitening toothpaste:  Here’s another one that I’m not making up!  Whitening toothpaste can be used to brighten yellow nails.  Add a bit of whitening toothpaste to each nail and gently rub it in.  Let it sit for a few minutes before washing off with water. Pat dry with a soft towel.

These are a few simple things you can do at home to whiten those yellowed nails and never have to worry about yellow nails again.  Let us know in the comments how the remedies work!
